The Red Line runs all night. It also passes most of the city’s late-hour bars on its way from Uptown to River North, which makes for a bar crawl you can finish without a car.

How a bar earns two more hours
Most Chicago bars stop serving at two in the morning. A little over a hundred hold a second licence that lets them keep pouring until four, and until five on a Sunday. The privilege is written into the municipal code, and the city makes it hard to get. If fifty or more registered voters live within five hundred feet of the door, the applicant has to write to every one of them, collect the signed consent of a majority, and file a safety plan for the pavement outside.
That is why the list is short enough to print in full. It is also why the licence tells you less than you would expect.
Plenty of bars on the city’s list still lock the door at two most nights. Some only run late on Friday and Saturday. Kingston Mines shuts at two on a Thursday. Smart Bar does not open until ten. The times below are the ones each business currently posts, and they change.
Ride It Down the Line
Start in Uptown with a jazz set and finish in River North near dawn. Every stop sits on the Red Line, so the train home runs the whole time you are out. Nobody is doing all ten in a night. Pick three or four that suit the evening you want and let the train handle the rest.

A jazz room in Uptown, open since the early 1900s. Live music most nights and a poetry slam on Sundays. The bar takes cash only. Regulars advise turning up well before the headline set, and say people actually listen during the music. A booth along the wall gets pointed out as Capone’s. That is house tradition. No record backs it up. |

The closest bar to any station on this route, about a hundred paces from the platform. Craft cocktails and a long beer list, with open mic on Mondays, DJs midweek and at weekends, karaoke on Sundays. It now opens as a coffee shop on weekday mornings, which tells you what sort of hours it keeps. |

A live music hall upstairs and a dance club in the basement, inside a building raised in 1927 as a Swedish community centre. Smart Bar opened in July 1982 and R.E.M. played the room that same month. Four decades on, a show upstairs still rolls straight into a DJ night below. |

The newest room on this list and the closest to a platform anywhere on it, roughly thirty seconds from the turnstiles. It opened in spring 2026 in the space that was Berlin, the long-running Lakeview nightclub. Early evening it runs as The Belmont, a cocktail bar. After ten on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday it becomes Decibel, playing techno, house and eighties and nineties records. Cover is a few dollars once Decibel starts. |

What the licence allows
Municipal Code 4-60-130 permits selling alcohol until 4 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and until 5 a.m. on Sunday. Each bar sets its own closing time inside that window.

Why there are so few
Where fifty or more registered voters live within five hundred feet, the applicant must notify them by certified mail, obtain the written consent of a majority, and file an exterior safety plan.

Getting home
Red and Blue are the only L lines running around the clock. Every other line stops overnight, so a crawl that wanders onto the Brown or Purple leaves you stranded at closing. On the Red Line between roughly midnight and 5.30 a.m. the trains come every ten to fifteen minutes, which means the walk to the platform matters less than the wait once you are on it. Budget for that, and go with people.
How this was built. The 118 bars come from the City of Chicago liquor licence file, dataset nrmj-3kcf, filtered to active Late Hour licences. Distances are straight-line from each licensed address to the nearest station in the CTA rail-stations file, dataset 8pix-ypme. As a rough conversion, a tenth of a mile is two or three minutes on foot, and a third of a mile is about seven. The real walk is a little longer than the straight line, because streets are. Closing times are the ones each business posts, and they are the detail most likely to have changed since we checked. Confirm before you travel. Where a bar does not publish its hours, the table says so instead of guessing.
