Chicago’s official Divvy-station dataset lists 1,197 stations with 20,100 docks. Divvy’s own live feed, read the same week, lists 2,048 stations whose capacity fields sum to 21,953 — and 2,009 of those stations sit inside the same 77 community areas where the city’s file places 1,169. Counted the same way on the same map, the operator’s feed lists 840 more stations inside Chicago than the city’s dataset does. Neither file says what the city’s extract includes or leaves out, and this page does not guess; it counts both, dates both, and maps the one with the city’s name on it.

Two counts of one network
The city’s station dataset is a live extract: 1,197 stations, of which 1,184 are marked In Service, 12 Not In Service, and one Not Installed, refreshed the day before retrieval. The operator publishes its own list — the GBFS station feed, the bike-share industry’s standard published station list — and on August 15 it carried 2,048 stations. The two do not reconcile: placing every point in both files by the same method, the operator’s feed has 2,009 stations inside Chicago’s 77 community areas to the city file’s 1,169. The feed labels no station types and marks only one named region — 27 stations tagged Evanston — so the 840-station gap cannot be explained from the files themselves, and this page leaves it as what it is: two official counts of the same network, 840 apart.

In the city’s file, the Near West Side holds the most stations (85), but Lake View holds the most docks — 2,479 across its 64 stations — and the file’s single largest station is there too: the Eddy/Seminary Corral, listed at 120 docks. Seventy-four of the 77 community areas have at least one station in this file; Austin’s 31 and Belmont Cragin’s 24 lead the areas beyond the North Side lakefront and downtown. Dock counts are the file’s total-dock figures; its separate docks-in-service column sums to 19,891 of the 20,100.

The portal also archives Divvy’s old station snapshots — 242,239,696 rows from July 18, 2013, a few weeks after the system launched, through September 10, 2022, when the archive stops. Each figure above counts the distinct stations reporting on a single day inside that one file: 72 stations on its first day, a plateau near 600 through the late 2010s, and then a doubling in the archive’s final fourteen months as the system expanded citywide — 695 stations reporting on July 1, 2021, and 1,419 on the archive’s last day. The archive ends there; nothing on this page bridges its 2022 count to today’s files, because the feeds’ station definitions cannot be matched across them. What people did with all of this — the trips — is a different ledger, and our Divvy ridership analysis reads it separately.
Known limits
A station here is a row in a file published by the city or the operator, on the day named — not a field observation, and not a claim that a rack stands on a corner today. The three sources define stations their own ways, and no figure on this page blends them. The growth table counts stations reporting on single days — a station offline that day would not count — and the archive has gaps, which is why its checkpoints are dated to specific days rather than averaged. The 840-station gap between the city’s dataset and the operator’s feed is a fact about the two files; this page draws no conclusion about which better describes the street.
- Sources Divvy Bicycle Stations (bbyy-e7gq, 1,197 rows, refreshed August 14, 2026); Divvy’s live GBFS station-information feed (retrieved August 15, 2026, 2,048 stations); Divvy Bicycle Stations — Historical (eq45-8inv, 242,239,696 snapshot rows, July 18, 2013 – September 10, 2022); Boundaries — Community Areas (igwz-8jzy). All retrieved August 15, 2026.
- Geography Every station point in the city file and the operator feed was placed by point-in-polygon (even-odd rule) against the community-area boundaries — the same method for both, so the inside-Chicago counts compare like with like. The 28 city-file stations outside the 77 areas carry Evanston street names; the operator feed has 39 outside, 27 of them tagged to its Evanston region.
- Counting City-file figures (stations, docks, status) are the file’s own fields summed. Archive checkpoints count distinct station IDs reporting between midnight and midnight of the named day, entirely within the archived dataset. Nothing is interpolated, and no figure joins two sources.
