West Town leads Chicago in bike-rack installation records since 2015 — 739 in the city’s current file — with the Loop nine records behind at 730, and the top ten areas holding 4,747 of the file’s 9,448 mapped records — just over half of them. One honest boundary before the ranking: no complete count of Chicago’s standing bike racks exists in any city file. The current dataset covers installs from 2015 on; the older stock sits in a separate file frozen in 2011 that was never merged, and whatever went in between 2011 and 2015 appears in neither — the full analysis reads both files at their own boundaries. So this list ranks recorded installations in the current file’s 2015–2026 span, placed by each record’s own coordinates, and nothing more. All 77 community areas have at least one. These are the city’s own installation records, and this page takes no position on where anyone should live or ride.

Questions these numbers can answer
Which Chicago area has the most bike racks? No city file can answer that — there is no complete census of standing racks. By city installation records since 2015, West Town leads with 739, the Loop second at 730.
How many bike racks does Chicago have? The city’s own files cannot say. The current file holds 9,449 installation records from 2015 on; a separate file of 5,164 records froze in 2011 and was never merged; and installs between 2011 and 2015 appear in neither. The two files are never summed.
Does every community area have a bike-rack record since 2015? Yes — every one of the 77 community areas holds at least one installation record in the file, from West Town’s 739 down to single digits in a handful of areas.
Where these numbers come from
The city’s Bike Racks dataset (hgdw-64h3, 9,449 rows, updated June 3, 2026), which by its own description contains racks installed 2015–2026. Each record was placed by its recorded coordinates against the city’s community-area boundary polygons; 9,448 of 9,449 place. The two-file split, the unstated quantity unit, and the rest of the method: Chicago’s Bike-Rack Data Splits in Two: 9,449 Records Since 2015, and a 2011 File the City Never Merged.
