The Fare Fell. The Bill Rose. The Additional-Charges Line Now Takes More Than a Third of What Chicago Riders Pay.
Chicago rideshare riders paid $4.21 a mile in June 2026, up from $3.81 three Junes earlier - but the fare component fell from $2.90 to $2.51. The 'additional charges' line grew from 18.2% to 34.6% of the bill, with the climb starting in mid-2025. Lincoln Park pickups run $5.51 a mile; West Pullman, $2.73.
In June 2026, riders took 6,486,420 Uber and Lyft trips that began in a Chicago community area, covered 46,422,589 recorded miles, and paid 195,318,958 dollars. That works out to $4.21 per mile, all-in — up from $3.81 in June 2023 on the same basis. But the fare did not drive that increase. The fare column alone — what the file calls the fare for the trip — actually fell, from $2.90 to $2.51 per mile. What grew is the line the trip files call “additional charges” — the taxes, fees, and any other charges on the trip, in the dataset’s own definition. Three Junes ago that line took 18.2 percent of what riders paid. This June it took 34.6 percent — more than a third of the bill.
The fare fell. The bill rose.
Rideshare companies report their trips to the city under ordinance, and the city publishes the trip file — hundreds of millions of rows, with each trip’s fare, tip, additional charges, and miles. These two lines are computed from the trips in that file with a recorded Chicago pickup community area and recorded mileage, month by month, from January 2023 through June 2026. The red line is the total riders paid per mile. The gray line is the fare alone. They used to move together; since mid-2025 they have pulled apart. Measured by the fare column alone, a mile got cheaper over these three years. Measured by what was paid, it got more expensive. The gap between the lines holds both tips and the additional-charges line. Tips’ share of the total stayed near 6 percent in both Junes — a stable slice of a rising total, so tip dollars per mile rose modestly — and nearly all of the widening comes from the additional-charges line.
The break came in mid-2025
For two and a half years, the additional-charges line held between 18 and 22 percent of the total. From July 2025 it climbed, with month-to-month wobble but no retreat to the old range: 25 percent by September 2025, 29 percent in January 2026, 34.6 percent this June. The trip file does not itemize what sits inside the additional-charges line; the dataset defines it only as the taxes, fees, and any other charges for the trip, all in one number — so this analysis cannot say which of them grew or who set the increases. What it can say is arithmetic: as of June 2026, more than one dollar of every three that Chicago rideshare riders pay is not fare and not tip. One check on the numbers matters here: the city splits its trip records into a 2023–24 file and a 2025-onward file, and the series shows no visible break at that seam — 20.9 percent in December 2024, 21.2 in January 2025 — while the climb begins six months into the newer file. That does not prove the split played no role, but the timing does not point at it.
Where a mile costs the most
Geography sorts the price of a mile almost two-to-one. Trips picked up in Lincoln Park ran $5.51 a mile in June 2026; from West Pullman, $2.73. Trip length runs alongside that gap: June 2026 pickups in the five priciest areas averaged five to seven miles per trip, while the five cheapest averaged seven and a half to nearly nine. A flat per-trip charge weighs more on a short ride, which would fit that pattern, though the unitemized file cannot apportion the gap between charges, trip mix, and anything else. The fastest three-year increases, meanwhile, came away from downtown — Norwood Park (+27.5 percent), Ashburn (+27.4), Chicago Lawn (+26.5) — while the Loop and Near North Side, already the most expensive, rose the least. We report what the trip records show and take no position on where anyone should live or how anyone should travel.
How we counted
Source: City of Chicago Transportation Network Providers trip files: Trips 2025- (6dvr-xwnh, trips through June 30, 2026, rows updated July 24, 2026) and Trips 2023–2024 (n26f-ihde). Every sum was computed on the city’s portal; no trip-level data was downloaded. Each figure is reproducible with one portal query per dataset (the 2023–24 file and the 2025- file are queried separately and figures spanning both use one query against each): sums of fare, tip, additional_charges, trip_total, and trip_miles, filtered to trip_miles > 0 and a non-null pickup_community_area, grouped by month (date_trunc_ym of the start timestamp) for the series or by pickup_community_area for the June windows.
The measure: cost per mile = total paid (fare + tip + additional charges, as the file defines trip_total) divided by recorded trip miles, over trips with miles greater than zero and a recorded Chicago pickup community area. Fare-only per mile uses the fare column alone. June 2023 and June 2026 are compared as matched months.
Privacy rounding: the city rounds each published fare to the nearest $2.50 and each tip to the nearest $1.00, and cash tips are not recorded. Aggregates over millions of trips largely average the rounding out, but every dollar figure here inherits it.
The floor: community-area rankings include the 53 areas with at least 20,000 trips in both Junes.
The seam: the records span two portal datasets that split at January 2025; the monthly additional-charges share moves 20.9 to 21.2 percent across that boundary with no visible break, and the climb begins in July 2025, six months into the newer file — timing that does not point at the split, though it cannot rule out reporting changes.
What this is not: the additional-charges line is not itemized, so nothing here attributes the increase to any particular tax, surcharge, or company decision. Per-mile cost is not a fare quote — it reflects each area’s actual mix of trip lengths, times, and destinations. Driver pay appears nowhere in this file.
