2. Near North Side — $5.29 a mile
Trips picked up in the Near North Side cost $5.29 per mile all-in in June 2026, across 966,675 trips — up 7.1 percent from $4.94 in June 2023. The average trip from the Near North Side ran 5.9 miles, and 34.3 percent of what riders paid was the additional-charges line.

Where these numbers come from
The City of Chicago’s Transportation Network Provider trip files (Trips 2025- and the 2023–24 archive), which record every reported trip’s fare, tip, additional charges, and miles. Cost per mile = total paid ÷ recorded miles over Chicago-pickup trips with miles greater than zero, June 2023 and June 2026 as matched months, summed on the city’s portal. The city rounds each published fare to the nearest $2.50 and each tip to the nearest $1.00, cash tips are not recorded, and the dataset’s documentation states no comparable rounding for the additional-charges or mileage fields; aggregates over tens of thousands of trips largely average the rounding out, but every dollar figure here inherits it.
