Eight community areas — the Near North Side, Lake View, Lincoln Park, the Near West Side, West Town, the Loop, Logan Square, and Uptown — account for just over half of all 2025 trip starts. Another 8,989 trips, about a tenth of a percent, carry no start community area in the file and sit outside the table.
The delivery robots inside the scooter file
The dataset describes itself as “electric scooter trips taken under the City of Chicago ongoing program,” and its vendor column as “the vendor of the scooter.” Two of the four vendors it lists describe their own business differently. Serve Robotics calls itself “a leading autonomous sidewalk delivery company” in its September 30, 2025 press release announcing its Chicago launch with Uber Eats across 14 named neighborhoods. Coco Robotics’ own site lists Chicago among its markets for “self-driving delivery vehicles.” Nothing in the dataset explains why their trips report through the scooter feed; this page reports the rows as the file records them and the companies’ own descriptions of what they operate.
The file’s records align with the announcement’s timeline: Serve’s first 56 trips appear in September 2025 — the month of its launch announcement — then roughly 32,000 a month through December. Coco’s trips begin in December 2024 and total 36,781 for 2025. Every community area among Serve’s top trip-start areas in the file — the Near West Side, Lake View, Lincoln Park, the Near North Side, West Town, Uptown — appears on the launch announcement’s neighborhood list.
The trips themselves look different from scooter trips. A Coco trip averaged 0.59 miles and 16 minutes in 2025 — walking pace. A Serve trip averaged 1.88 miles and 9.2 minutes. Lime’s scooters averaged 1.29 miles and 10.2 minutes, Lyft’s 1.24 miles and 14.6 minutes. Averages divide the file’s vendor-reported distance and duration fields over each vendor’s 2025 trips; the file states distances in meters, converted here at 1,609 meters to the mile.

The file ends December 31, 2025, so this is a season review, and nothing here describes 2026. Trips are what vendors report to the city; the file does not say what any trip carried, who rode, or whether a robot trip delivered food. Start and end times are rounded to the nearest hour by the file for privacy; locations resolve only to community areas. Growth and vendor churn are reported as counts, with no claim about fleet sizes, permits, or pricing — none of which appear in this dataset.
