How much do the paid ones list? Mostly $50 or less: 4,176 of the 5,141 paid programs, 81.2 percent. The paid median is $25, the middle half of paid programs runs from $10 to $42, and 13 programs list more than $500.

Why would senior programs be free and early-childhood programs not? The file does not say — it carries prices, not policies. What it shows is the size of the pattern: the 659 senior programs include 647 free ones, the 474 teen programs include 312, and early childhood — the third-largest age range, at 1,605 programs — has 46.

The largest category, Fitness, lists 237 free programs among its 546, and Basketball, the second largest, 129 among 504. The file keeps two near-identical labels apart: “Recreational,” 468 programs with 1 free, and “Recreation,” 414 programs with 11. Skating is the one large category with no free program at all, 0 of 228, and hockey’s 80 programs, below the table’s cut, list none either.

Where the programs are, and where the free ones are

McFetridge Sports Center is the listed facility for the most fall programs, 240, and one of them lists $0. The next two, Addams (Jane) Park with 104 and Peterson Gymnastics Center with 103, list none. The free programs gather elsewhere: Nash (Don) Community Center Park lists 43, West Pullman Park 42 and Homan Square Community Center Park 41. Across 251 facility labels, the five with the most programs and the five with the most free programs share no name.

The highest listed prices

The highest listed prices are for ice hockey. A team league filed as the Adult Ice Hockey League at McFetridge lists $4,600, another team league at the Morgan Park Sports Center rink lists $4,083, and three youth hockey leagues at McFetridge list $975 each. The one entry among the six highest that is not hockey is Kiddie College — Fall Winter Spring at Chase, filed as an activity package at $1,182.

When registration opened

For almost everything, before the season began: 6,954 of the 6,977 programs list a registration date before September 1, the earliest April 21. Another 16 list one from September 1 through September 15, six list one after September 15, the latest September 23, and one lists none.
