The Suburbs of Chicago: A Map and List of All 267 Towns in the Six Metra Counties, by Train Line, With Ride Times, Home Values and Rents

A map and list of all 267 suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, grouped north, northwest, west, southwest and south by Metra line, with train times, home values and rents for nearly every town.

Counted town by town, the Chicago suburbs are 267 cities, towns and villages in the six Illinois counties served by Metra, the region’s commuter railroad, home to about 5.15 million people. 114 of them have a Metra station of their own, and about two of every three suburban residents live in one of those towns. The map and list below show every one, grouped into the five parts people here name — north, northwest, west, southwest and south — with the lines between them drawn by the railroads.

Every suburb, by part and by railroad. Each town is drawn at its Census boundary and shaded by the part of the suburbs it belongs to on this page; darker shading marks the 114 towns with a Metra station. The lines are Metra’s routes in the same colors, white dots are suburban stations, gray is the City of Chicago, and blank land belongs to no town. The larger towns are labeled; on a computer, hovering over a town shows its name, and every town is in the list below. What are the suburbs of Chicago, and how many are there?

There is no official list. “The Chicago suburbs” and “Chicagoland,” the everyday name for Chicago and its suburbs together, are not legal terms, so any count of the cities and towns near Chicago has to draw its own line. This one counts the incorporated cities, towns and villages, the places with a local government of their own, in the six Illinois counties Metra’s commuter trains serve: Cook County outside the city, and DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will. Those five, the ring around Cook, are what the region calls the collar counties.

That makes 267 suburbs. Cook County holds 118 of them and 2.31 million of their 5.15 million people; Lake County has 46 towns, DuPage 31, McHenry 27, Will 23 and Kane 22. A town that crosses a county line is counted once, in the county that holds its Census center point, so Aurora, which reaches into four counties, counts in Kane. Unincorporated land, which belongs to no town and shows blank on the map, is left out, and so are places in the counties beyond these six that broader definitions of the region take in.

How are the Chicago suburbs divided?

By direction, and on this page the directions follow the railroads. Metra’s 11 lines leave four downtown terminals and fan out like spokes, and the corridors they cut are a workable way to draw lines the region never drew. So each town goes to a part by its railroad: the line at its own Metra station or, for a town without one, the line at the station closest to it in a straight line. Only three towns count in two parts: Joliet, Rockdale and Shorewood, all tied to Joliet’s station. The site’s list for each part goes town by town; those lists were drawn with their own rules, so their counts, and a few placements, differ from this page’s.

The north suburbs and the North Shore

Three railroads run north. The Union Pacific North leaves Ogilvie Transportation Center and follows the lake to Kenosha; the Milwaukee District North and the North Central Service leave Union Station and head inland. Together they serve 56 towns and about 1.01 million people, and Waukegan, with 89,076 people, is the largest. The North Shore is the lakefront string from Evanston to Lake Bluff: Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Highwood, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, 188,687 people whose towns have a middle home value of $810,600. Every one of the nine has a UP North station, with 26 to 35 weekday trains toward downtown. Inland, the line matters as much as the town: the North Central Service runs six or seven at each of its stations. The north suburbs list covers 55 of these towns; it leaves out Lincolnwood, whose closest station is inside the city.

The northwest suburbs

One railroad, the Union Pacific Northwest, runs from Ogilvie through Park Ridge, Des Plaines, Arlington Heights and Palatine to Crystal Lake and Harvard, with a branch to McHenry. It serves 44 towns and about 672,000 people; Arlington Heights (76,005) is the largest. Only 12 of the 44 have a station of their own, the smallest share of any part, so for most of the northwest the ride starts at a station in another town. The northwest suburbs list covers 20 of these towns, and also lists Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates and Streamwood, which this page puts in the west.

The west suburbs

Three railroads run west: the BNSF from Union Station to Aurora, the Union Pacific West from Ogilvie to Elburn and the Milwaukee District West from Union Station to Elgin, joined by the North Central Service’s stops near O’Hare. This is the largest part, 87 towns and 2.15 million people, with both of the two largest suburbs, Aurora (179,898) and Naperville (150,692), and the shortest rides downtown, from Cicero, Oak Park and Berwyn. One result may surprise people who know the area: Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Streamwood and Hanover Park, which many people call northwest suburbs, are closest to the Milwaukee District West, so the railroad rule puts them in the west. The west suburbs list covers 48 of these towns, and also lists Bolingbrook and Burr Ridge, which this page groups with the southwest. Of the five towns just named, only Hanover Park is on it; Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village and Streamwood are on the northwest list, and Schaumburg is on neither.

The southwest suburbs

Two railroads run southwest: the SouthWest Service from Union Station to Manhattan and the Heritage Corridor to Joliet. They serve 35 towns and about 713,000 people. Service here is thin: the SouthWest Service tops out at 15 weekday trains toward downtown and the Heritage Corridor runs three. Joliet (150,445), the third-largest suburb, sits at the end of both the Heritage Corridor and the Rock Island, so it counts here and in the south, and it has the Rock Island’s trains as well. Bolingbrook, at 74,096 the largest suburb with no station, is closest to the Heritage Corridor’s Romeoville stop, 4.5 miles away. The southwest suburbs list covers 30 of these towns and New Lenox, which this page groups with the south by its Rock Island station; the five it leaves out, Evergreen Park, Hometown, Braidwood, Wilmington and Godley, are closest to a station inside the city or more than eight miles from any.

The south suburbs

Two railroads run south: the Metra Electric from Millennium Station to University Park and the Rock Island from LaSalle Street Station to Joliet. They serve 48 towns and about 779,000 people; after Joliet, Tinley Park (54,842) is the largest. The south pairs the lowest home values of the five parts, a middle of $186,800, with some of the busiest stations: 31 weekday trains toward downtown at Homewood on the Metra Electric and 39 at Blue Island’s Vermont Street on the Rock Island. The south suburbs list covers 46 of these towns; it leaves out Beecher and Peotone, more than eight miles from a station.

The parts of the suburbs, by Metra line. Middle home value and rent are the median of the towns’ Census medians (2020–2024); rides are Metra’s scheduled typical morning trip from the towns with a station. Joliet, Rockdale and Shorewood count in both the south and the southwest. Each line code links to Metra’s page for that line and its timetable

Read across the table and price is where the parts differ most. The middle home value runs from $393,750 among the north towns to $186,800 among the south; middle rents run from $1,663 to about $1,300. Our reading: between the north and the south, home values differ by about two to one and rents by about a quarter, so the parts are much further apart for buyers than for renters.

Which Chicago suburbs have a Metra station?

114 of the 267, holding 3.34 million people, about two-thirds of everyone in the suburbs. Another 136 towns are within eight miles of a suburban station in a straight line; the other 17 are farther out, or closest to a station inside the city.

A station is not the same as service. Weekday trains toward downtown reach 39 at Blue Island’s Vermont Street stop on the Rock Island and 35 at Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka and Palatine. On the Heritage Corridor, Summit, Willow Springs, Lemont, Romeoville and Lockport get three, and all three reach Union Station between 6 and 9:30 a.m.; the UP Northwest’s McHenry branch also has three. Each line in the table above links to Metra’s own timetable.

Some large suburbs have no station at all: Bolingbrook (74,096 people), Skokie (66,219), Hoffman Estates (51,175) and Plainfield (46,708), which is 9.6 miles from the nearest one, in Aurora. Five towns along the city line, Evergreen Park, Hometown, Harwood Heights, Lincolnwood and Norridge, are closest to a station inside Chicago. This page counts Metra only; a few towns at the city’s edge, among them Evanston, Wilmette, Skokie, Oak Park, Forest Park, Cicero and Rosemont, also have stations on the CTA’s “L,” the city’s rapid-transit trains.

Which suburbs are closest to downtown by train?

By the timetable, Cicero: the BNSF’s typical morning train reaches Union Station in 17 minutes. Oak Park follows at 20 minutes on the UP West, then Berwyn at 23 and La Grange at 24. Ten station towns have a typical morning ride under half an hour, and nine of them are on the BNSF or the UP West, west of the city; the tenth, Summit, is 29 minutes out on the Heritage Corridor, with only those three trains. At the far end, Antioch’s ride is 98 minutes, on seven weekday trains toward downtown; Fox Lake and Lake Villa are at 93 minutes and Harvard at 92. Across all 114 station towns, the middle typical ride is 46 minutes.

“Typical” here is the median scheduled trip on trains reaching downtown between 6 and 9:30 a.m. from the town’s busiest station; a town without a station takes the ride from the one closest to it, which still has to be reached first.

What are the wealthiest suburbs of Chicago?

By the two Census measures on this page, household income and home value, the answer is a short list. Five towns have a median household income at the survey’s top reported value, $250,000 or more: Hinsdale, Kenilworth, Kildeer, Long Grove and Winnetka. Five have a median home value of $1 million or more: Kenilworth ($1,560,300); Glencoe ($1,432,500); Winnetka ($1,337,800); Hinsdale ($1,053,700); Bannockburn ($1,037,200). Kenilworth, Winnetka and Glencoe are on the North Shore; Long Grove and Bannockburn are inland north towns without a station; Kildeer is in the northwest; and Hinsdale, on the BNSF, is the one west suburb on either list.

Which Chicago suburbs have the lowest home values and rents?

Home values are lowest in south Cook County. Among estimates whose margin of error is no more than a quarter of the estimate (the table marks the others with an asterisk), the lowest median home values are in Harvey ($88,100), Phoenix ($96,200), Sauk Village ($110,800), Riverdale ($113,800), Park Forest ($115,300) and Robbins ($121,300). The lowest rents are more spread out. Harvey has the lowest median rent, $960 a month, followed by Peotone ($979), Chicago Heights ($1,038), Braidwood ($1,044) and Fox Lake ($1,047); the Census measure here is gross rent, what tenants pay including the utilities they pay themselves. Across all 267 towns, the middle median home value is $321,900 and the middle median rent $1,493 a month.

Does a longer ride buy a lower price? It depends on the direction. On the north lines, station towns with a typical morning ride under 50 minutes have a middle home value of $652,300, against $309,500 for those at 50 minutes or more; on the northwest line, $397,400 against $298,900. On the south lines it runs the other way, $185,300 closer in against $250,600 farther out, and on the southwest lines $256,900 against $324,300. On the west lines the two are about even, $344,700 and $356,250. Our reading: trading minutes for a lower price is the pattern on the north and northwest lines; on the south and southwest lines the lower prices are in the towns closer in.

What are the largest suburbs of Chicago?

Aurora, with 179,898 people, then Naperville (150,692) and Joliet (150,445), each with its own Metra station. Elgin (114,934), Waukegan (89,076), Cicero (82,797), Schaumburg (76,868), Evanston (76,340), Arlington Heights (76,005) and Bolingbrook (74,096) complete the ten.

What this map and list can’t tell you

  • On the recordWhich towns in the six counties are incorporated, which have a Metra station and, at each station, how many weekday trains run toward downtown and the scheduled morning ride. From Metra’s timetable feed and the Census Bureau’s gazetteer.
  • On the recordEach town’s population, median home value, household income and rent, as Census five-year estimates for the whole town.
  • Not establishedWhat any one home costs now. The home value is what owners told the survey their homes were worth, pooled over 2020 to 2024, and it trails the market.
  • Not establishedSchools, property taxes or safety. None of the sources here measures them, and in Illinois school districts and taxing districts often do not line up with town borders.
  • Not establishedHow long a drive takes, or whether trains run on time. Distances are straight lines and rides are the timetable’s.

How we counted

  • Towns. Incorporated cities, towns and villages in the Census Bureau’s 2024 gazetteer whose internal point, the center point the Bureau publishes for each place, lies in Cook (outside Chicago), DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry or Will County, by the Census geocoder, plus any Illinois town with a Metra station of its own.
  • Parts of the suburbs. The line at the town’s station with the most weekday trains toward downtown, or for a town without one, at its closest Metra station in a straight line from the internal point. North: UP North, Milwaukee District North and the North Central Service north of the city; northwest: UP Northwest; west: BNSF, UP West, Milwaukee District West and the North Central Service’s stops near O’Hare; southwest: SouthWest Service and Heritage Corridor; south: Metra Electric and Rock Island. Joliet’s station serves the Heritage Corridor and the Rock Island, so Joliet, Rockdale and Shorewood count in both the south and the southwest. The region lists were drawn with their own rules, so their counts, and a few placements, differ.
  • Trains. Metra’s GTFS schedule feed, read October 20, 2026: weekday trains whose last stop is a downtown terminal, counted at each station they serve; morning rides use those arriving downtown from 6:00 to 9:30 a.m.
  • Census figures. American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimates, tables B01003, B25077, B19013 and B25064, from the Census Bureau’s table-based summary files. In the table, an asterisk marks a figure whose margin of error is more than a quarter of the estimate, and a dash means no estimate was published. The “middle” values for groups of towns are medians of the towns’ medians, not of every home.
  • Map. Town and city boundaries from the Census Bureau’s TIGERweb incorporated places, simplified for drawing; route lines from the route shapes in Metra’s schedule feed.
  • What we did not do. We did not rank or score the towns, and nothing here weighs schools, taxes or safety.

Compiled by KCM Desk from Metra’s schedule feed and Census Bureau files read October 20, 2026. Human-guided and edited — about this desk. If you spot an error, corrections come first.
